Elana & Daniel

DANIEL-ELANAI was fortunate enough to photograph Elana and Daniel’s wedding at St. James Anglican Cathedral in Fresno on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2009. It was a very nice service held in the beautiful cathedral with I think over 200 people in attendance. I was able to photograph the happy couple around the scenic grounds at the church and then captured the events of the reception in the gymnasium. Thanks Elana and Daniel for the opportunity. It was a great time.

Tour of California – into the Sierras

SPT CEK TOUR OF CALIFORNIAFinally got my first chance to photograph the Amgen Tour of California Wednesday. I had applied for credentials for several years but for whatever reason, I was never able to make it out to one of the stages. This time it was coming into our coverage area so we would definitely be all over it. The Bee had both the start and finish covered so they had me head up to the summit of one of the climbs. I chose Highway 49 just north of Ahwahnee where the fourth King of the Mountains point was set. Snow covered the hills around us after days of storms. It would make a cool shot. After three hours of waiting the riders finally came by going much faster than even I was expecting. These guys are amazing athletes. I was happy to grab one frame of Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer of the Astana team. All that waiting for about 30 seconds of photos. So I headed down the hill to catch them riding into Clovis for a few more shots. Among the other riders I photographed were George Hincapie and Floyd Landis.

Chris & Emma

LOETHENI photographed a very nice couple last weekend at Woodward park where we had an absolutely beautiful day to work with. Chris had approached me with an idea to give his girlfriend Emma a photography session of them as a Christmas gift. I thought that was a great idea, so although they were just a happy couple in love with no big plans yet, I photographed them very much like an engagement session. They were a lot of fun and did a great job making moments to shoot.

Cast away

MTD CEK KINGS FISHINGwhile on a feature hunt I found myself wandering further and further out of town. That’s not unusual at all. Sometimes I just let my whims drive the car and before you know it, I’ve got 100 miles on the car just looking for something that makes a picture. Lucky for me I found this guy fishing on the Kings in relatively short time. He was perched on a rock in a scenic spot that captured the pretty colors of the hills as well as the spring-like sunshine overhead. He was a nice guy who I chatted with about his construction trade that had been pretty slow due to the economy. The fishing happened to be pretty slow too. He was ok with it though because it was such a nice day.

Teen going green

SCHOLASTIC-HERNANDEZI spent a day off from The Bee last Friday on a freelance assignment for Scholastic News, you know that little newspaper we used to look at as kids in school. I drove down to Bakersfield to photograph a teenager who helped organize an awareness campaign about a scrap metal plant polluting the environment when he lived in Oakland. Heavy metals in the air caused major problems with his asthma. He led a press conference that drew attention from local media and city council members and got the place cleaned up. Juan even ended up in Newsweek for his efforts. What’s even better for Juan is that his move has helped him turn the corner on his original problem – getting mixed up in gangs. My son reads Scholastic News in his sixth grade class so I’ll be interested to see how he tests on that quiz.
